la storia di alcuni studenti nella birmingham degli anni settanta, tra i tories che stanno per vincere con margaret tatcher e gli attentati dell’ira. Molte battute divertenti – la profezia: i tories non vinceranno mai – ma soprattutto un romanzo sulla complessità delle vicende sociali e umane e dell’amore: “welsh have hated the english for as long as anyone can remember, and they’ll carry on hating until…” Questo è quanto dichiara un welsh a un giovane inglese che, pure, apprezza.

eppure …”in his new closeness to her, he was already discovering a truer self: and that self was not sure at all, whether god existed or not……even more doubting self than the one he had lived with before”.
